Structured JKD development

The Training Pathway

From foundation to personal expression.

A progressive approach to developing Jeet Kune Do. Beginning with structure and fundamentals, progressing through functional application, and ultimately leading toward an individual fighting method.

The process

Structure first.
Freedom later.

JKD is often associated with freedom from systems and limitations. But meaningful freedom requires understanding.

The JKD Method curriculum therefore begins with clear structure. As skill and experience develop, the training becomes increasingly open, adaptive and individual.

Developmental sequence
  • Learn the structure
  • Develop the skill
  • Test the skill
  • Solve problems
  • Build your game
  • Develop your method

The JKD Method curriculum

Ten methods.
One developmental path.

Method 01

Foundations

Build the platform.

Develop

  • On Guard
  • Footwork
  • Fighting Measure
  • Lead Straight
  • Rear Straight
  • Lead-Leg Tools
  • Basic Defence
  • Interception
  • Introduction to Aliveness

Foundation Function

Method 02

Developing the Fighting Game

Build your game.

Develop

  • Expanded hand tools
  • Expanded kicking tools
  • Combination attack
  • Defence into offence
  • Creating openings
  • Counter fighting
  • Attributes
  • Decision making

Tools Tactics

Method 03

Movement & Measure

Control the fight.

Develop

  • Distance recognition
  • Range manipulation
  • Entries
  • Exits
  • Angles
  • Drawing
  • Closing
  • Retreating
  • Position

Distance Control

Method 04

Five Ways of Attack

Organise attack.

Develop the classic JKD tactical framework

  • Single Direct / Single Angular Attack
  • Attack By Combination
  • Progressive Indirect Attack
  • Attack By Drawing
  • Hand Immobilisation Attack

Each method then moves from concept, into drill, into variable practice, into sparring.

Concept Drill Variable Practice Sparring

Method 05

Interception

Hit while the opportunity is becoming available.

Develop

  • Reading intention
  • Stop hits
  • Stop kicks
  • Counter-time
  • Interception against entries
  • Timing
  • Restricted sparring
  • Open application

Perception Interception

Method 06

Contact & Trapping

Understand contact without becoming dependent upon it.

Develop

  • Reference points
  • Sensitivity
  • Forward pressure
  • Hand immobilisation
  • Trapping
  • Hits from contact
  • Progressive resistance
  • Breaking attachment to the drill

Contact Function

Method 07

Close Range

Function when distance collapses.

Develop

  • Close-range striking
  • Frames
  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Clinch position
  • Controls
  • Takedown awareness
  • Disengagement

Contact Control

Method 08

Ground

Survive, move and regain position.

Develop

  • Ground awareness
  • Position
  • Movement
  • Escapes
  • Striking awareness
  • Standing safely
  • Self-protection considerations

Survive Recover

Method 09

Aliveness

Learn how to train.

Develop

  • Isolation sparring
  • Constraint-led training
  • Situational sparring
  • Technical sparring
  • Open sparring
  • Intensity management
  • Partner development
  • Problem solving

Drill Game

Method 10

Integration

Connect the ranges.

Integrate

  • Striking
  • Kicking
  • Contact
  • Clinch
  • Takedown
  • Ground
  • Recovery
  • Disengagement

The student is presented with increasingly open tactical problems.

Skills Fighting

Beyond the curriculum

The Personal Method

The final destination is not another collection of techniques.

It is the ability to identify your strengths, preferred tools, preferred ranges, tactical tendencies and limitations, then develop a method appropriate to you.

My range
My tools
My entry
My attack
My counter
My exit
My weaknesses
My development priorities

Make the method your own.

Not just video lessons

Every method is built to produce skill.

  1. Stage 01

    Lesson

    Understand the concept.

  2. Stage 02

    Drill

    Develop the mechanics.

  3. Stage 03

    Assignment

    Train independently.

  4. Stage 04

    Test

    Introduce movement and uncertainty.

  5. Stage 05

    Sparring

    Apply against resistance.

  6. Stage 06

    Assess

    Demonstrate functional competency.

The standard lesson

Understand → Learn → Train → Test

01

Understand

What are we learning and why?

02

Learn

Clear technical instruction.

03

Train

A structured drill.

04

Test

Movement, perception or resistance.

05

Assignment

Something to complete.

06

Coach's Notes

Key cues and common mistakes.

Competency over attendance

Progress when you can do it.

Watching lessons does not demonstrate skill. Neither does simply completing a predetermined number of sessions.

Progression within JKD Method is based upon demonstrated capability.

01

Developing

The student understands the skill but cannot yet apply it reliably.

02

Functional

The skill can be demonstrated and applied under appropriate conditions.

03

Consistent

The skill survives movement, timing and increasing resistance with reliability.

Function before progression.

Solo development

No partner today?
Train anyway.

We do not pretend that all of JKD can be learned alone. Contact, timing and resistance require another person.

But a great deal of serious development can be done on your own, and the Academy treats solo training as real training rather than filler.

01Footwork
02Shadow fighting
03Heavy bag
04Double-end bag
05Wall target
06Reaction training
07Speed
08Power
09Conditioning
10Follow-along sessions

Partner work and resistance become increasingly important as the curriculum develops.
