The person behind the method

Jeff
Hollows

Teach the roots. Test the material. Keep evolving.

JKD Method was created from a simple idea: Jeet Kune Do deserves to be understood through both its history and its continued application.

Understand. • Train. • Test. • Evolve.

Why JKD Method exists

Jeff Hollows with Sifu Burton Richardson, Northumberland, UK

Jeff Hollows Founder, JKD Method

I didn’t want to create another video library.

There is an enormous amount of martial arts information available online. More techniques. More drills. More opinions.

But information alone does not produce skill.

I wanted to create something different: a structured way for people anywhere in the world to study Jeet Kune Do, understand the principles behind the material, train those skills properly and then test them honestly.

The aim is not to tell every practitioner exactly what their JKD must look like.

The aim is to provide enough structure that eventually they no longer need to copy someone else’s expression.

Structure should eventually create freedom — not dependence.

The approach

Rooted.
Functional.
Evolving.

01 / Roots

Rooted

Understand where the material came from.

Respect the historical development of Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do and study the material seriously.

02 / Function

Functional

Find out what you can actually use.

Training must eventually include movement, timing, uncertainty and resistance.

03 / Evolution

Evolving

Don’t confuse preservation with understanding.

As experience develops, adapt training to the individual while remaining clear about what has changed and why.

A working record, not a highlight reel

The journey

The route matters more than the résumé. This is the path that led to the way I train and teach today.

  1. Step 01

    Early martial arts training

I started training at the age of nine, in karate.

Through my early teens I trained Taekwondo, Choy Lee Fut kung fu and Sanda.

  2. Step 02

    Discovering Jeet Kune Do

I had my first formal training in Jeet Kune Do in 2005, after reading and researching the art for many years.

At the time there were no instructors close to me, which meant travelling to seek JKD out.

  3. Step 03

    Jun Fan / JKD development

I have been a practitioner of Jeet Kune Do for well over two decades.

Certified Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Instructor under Sifu Burton Richardson. Certified Full Instructor in Jeet Kune Do under Michael Wright.

  4. Step 04

    Broader martial arts study

Jeet Kune Do sends you looking at other arts honestly. Alongside JKD I hold instructor certifications in:

    • Filipino martial arts
    • Submission grappling
    • Catch wrestling
    • Krav Maga, to black belt
    • Unarmed tactics, full instructor
    • Defensive tactics, certified instructor

Ranked to blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I also study and practise Jesse Glover’s Non-Classical Kung Fu, through his personal student Pierre Hartmann.

  5. Step 05

    Teaching & coaching

I have taught Jeet Kune Do publicly and privately since 2011.

Teaching changes how you understand your own material. Explaining an idea to someone seeing it for the first time forces you to separate what genuinely matters from what is only habit.

Most of what became JKD Method came out of that process.

  6. Step 06

    Applied Martial Arts

Applied Martial Arts is my local class, and where the material is tested in person rather than on camera.

    • Weekly Jeet Kune Do classes
    • Workshops and seminars
    • Private training

Teaching in a room with real people in front of you keeps the material honest. What holds up there is what makes its way into JKD Method.

  7. Now

    JKD Method

An international platform built around structured learning, functional training and continued development.

    Understand. Train. Test. Evolve.

Roots matter

Know where the material comes from.

Jeet Kune Do has a history. Understanding that history helps us understand the material, terminology, training methods and ideas we inherit.

Origin
Bruce Lee Founder of Jeet Kune Do and Jun Fan Gung Fu.
Transmission
Guro Dan Inosanto Student of Bruce Lee. The line through which most Jun Fan JKD material is passed on today.
My instructors
Sifu Burton Richardson Certified Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Instructor under Sifu Burton Richardson.
Michael Wright Certified Full Instructor in Jeet Kune Do under Michael Wright.

This diagram records where the material comes from. It is not a ranking structure and it does not imply endorsement by anyone named on it.

Lineage tells us where we started.
Training tells us where we are.

The coaching philosophy

Don’t create copies.

An instructor should provide structure, information, feedback and appropriate problems to solve.

But the destination should not be a room full of students attempting to look exactly like their instructor.

Stage 01

Teach

Give the student a clear model.

Stage 02

Coach

Help them improve performance.

Stage 03

Test

Expose strengths and weaknesses.

Stage 04

Release

Allow individual solutions to emerge.

Teach→Coach→Test→Release
The aim is not to create students who copy an instructor. The aim is to develop practitioners who understand what they are doing and why.

What I value in training

Six things I keep coming back to.

01

Simplicity

Remove what isn’t helping.

02

Directness

Solve the problem without unnecessary movement.

03

Interception

Act during opportunity rather than always reacting afterwards.

04

Efficiency

Use appropriate effort and movement.

05

Aliveness

Train against movement, timing and resistance.

06

Adaptability

The method serves the individual — not the reverse.

Real training matters

Online education.
Real-world practice.

JKD Method is an online platform, but martial skill ultimately requires physical practice.

The Academy is designed to support solo training, partner development, sparring, live instruction and continued real-world training rather than replace them.

Why this matters

Preserve the question, not just the answer.

One of the most valuable things Jeet Kune Do gives us is not simply a collection of answers. It gives us a way of questioning.

  • 01Why does this work?
  • 02When does it work?
  • 03What attributes does it require?
  • 04What happens when the opponent resists?
  • 05Does it still solve the problem?
  • 06Is there a simpler way?

That is
the method.
